what tire is right for the free sprit?Tuesday Oct 2nd 2007 Per recent communication with a “new” pace car owner, he asked a good question: Do the original Goodyear “Free Spirit” tires exist anymore? Answer: No. However there are alternatives. The first is the Goodyear Eagle #1 tire. A great looking tire, but it’s not Indy. It’s NASCAR. The second is the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tire. This tire is very appropriate to the car due to the fact it actually has “INDY 500″ on the sidewall. For those looking for more traditional lettering that doesn’t have so much of a slant, there’s the Goodyear Eagle GT II. This tire looks very close to the look of the mid-70’s. While the lettering still has a slant to it, it’s a very “traditional” looking tire and would fit the look of the Buick well. Being that the goal is to match the look of the original pace car as much as possible, the performance of the tire truly does not matter. When the time comes to strap on the proper rubber on my ‘75, I’d probably go with the GT II’s just because they are the most traditional looking. Hello Rich, Thanks for the tire choices. Looking at thetirerack website,I will probably also go with the goodyear eagles. After a few days with the car, after picking it up,it does seem to have evidence of 40k miles, but not in a garage for most of that time. What started as a leaking exhaust gasket, has progressed further than we expected running into frozen exh. manifold bolts, etc. I believe I have found a source for the body/bumper filler panels.I think they are fiberglass repos according to thier web site, but will verify and get back with details on this.(This one needs the rear center filler panel.)
Rich, the question I have has to do with the color of the filler panels.I know the rear tailight “covers” and center,(not outer),filler panels to bumper are black, but what about the front filler panels? This one has some kind of dark grey, some pics I have seen show gray. I belive GM photo shop archives show black? Any input on this? Thanks-Bill

Being that the car is supposed to have a GS blackout package on it, when in doubt go black.
The part of the filler that is covered by the bumper will confirm whether it’s supposed to be black or not (being it wasn’t exposed to the sun.)
There has also been some debate as to what color the side filler color is on the rear of the car. Some cars had silver, others white. Mine has white which to me looks more proper so that’s what I’m going with.
