I noticed some black lines in the bowl of my toilet that reappeared no matter how many times I cleaned it. The lines came from the holes that let the water in.

I had to open up the tank to investigate because I know the water isn’t dirty. I found the culprit; the rubber stopper. And the rubber just happens to be black. Over time the outer layer of the rubber breaks down and that’s what was leaving the black lines in the bowl.

I carefully cleaned off the stopper as best I could, because if it broke that would suck because then the bowl couldn’t refill itself after it was flushed. Fortunately it held together and should last for a while longer yet.

There were two things I learned from this experience:

1. I finally understand why some people have to jiggle the handle in order to got a proper flush. The stopper doesn’t land in the hole properly and you have to jiggle the chain so it does. However it is beyond me why people don’t replace the stopper, because then you wouldn’t have to do that jiggle thing anymore.

2. Toilet tanks do require periodic cleaning. I’d say at least once every six months to a year. You have to strap on the kitchen gloves, open the tank, have bleach at the ready and scrub it out. It only takes about 15 minutes and it’s easy.
